Ayurvedic herbs have played a significant role for skin care and during rejuvenation therapy.

Many of the herbs have play significant role towards healthy skin for making it glow, young and shiny.

List of herbs for skin care

In ayurvedic texts there are several herbs which have healthy skin property. Name of the some of these herbs are discussed here.

Holy Basil

It is a multipurpose herbs and have several health benefits.

It is a mild astringent and act as a good cleanser and tonic for the skin. 

It is rich in antioxidants and vitamins A and C, which destroyed the harmful free radicals which causes skin damage.

It also exhibits anti-fungal and antibiotic properties which are beneficial for the skin care.

Aloe Vera

Aloe vera is also known as the “Plant of immortality”.

It deeply moisturizes skin and make a protective barrier which save the skin from environmental damage.


Turmeric has huge medicinal value to the humanity.

It has antioxidant, antiseptic and anti-inflammatory properties.

It antiseptic properties is helpful in providing relief from acne.

It also soothes skin in the conditions like rosacea and eczema


Lavender exhibit significant curing potential for acne and eczema.

Lavender is a great herb for all skin types.

Antioxidants and anti-microbial activity of lavender protect skin against free radial mediated damage and prevent premature ageing of the skin.


Ashwagandha is a kind of ‘Super Rasayana’ with tremendous health potential.

As for skin health is concern, it eradicate the free radicals in the skin and prevent the formation of dark spots, wrinkles, blemishes and fine lines on the skin.

It anti-inflammatory, anti-microbial and anti-bacterial properties help in fast healing.


Yashtimadhu is also a kind of ‘Super Rasayana’.

Neem is a naturally astringent, anti-septic, antibacterial and anti-fungal herbs and well documented in ancient Ayurvedic texts for skin related issues.

Peppermint possess anti-inflammatory, antioxidant, anti-bacterial and astringent properties.

It increases local blood flow by stimulating the nerve endings and useful for dry skin.

Peppermint leaf contain phytochemicals menthol, which cools, refreshes and rejuvenates the skin.

Rose Petals

Rose petals has several unique capability such as cleansing, astringent, toning, moisturing, stimulating and soothing effect.

It moisturizes and nourishes all kind of skin.

It is predominantly beneficial to dry and sensitive skin.

Calendula is famous for its calming, anti-inflammatory and skin healing properties.

Dandelion is rich in vitamins A, B, C, D and trace elements.

It is also used in making Dandelion tea for detoxification and weight loss.

It root is advantageous for treating skin disorders like acne.

Green tea

Green tea can be consume as a tea as well as it damp tea bags can be placed on eyelids to reduce swelling, puffiness and dark circles.

A mixture of green tea and honeysuckle called “pimple tea” is a popular Asian remedy for acne.


It is a well-known anti-ageing herb have a lot of beneficial role for skin care.

How to make scrub?

Even after caring of skin by washing and cleansing every day, there are formation of dead skin cells which removal required face scrubs.

One can use scrub once or twice a week. Scrub stimulate circulation and help slough off dead skin cells. Scrubbing should be done smoothly and gently.

Using different combination of the above listed herbs one can make facial scrubs, facial packs for the health skin.

Ingredients of the some of the scrubs are listed below.

Herbal facial scrub

  • 1 cup flour (Oat or gram flour)
  • 1 tsp Haldi powder
  • ¼  cup dried herbs powder (one can choose either a single or a mixture of herbs)
  • 1 tablespoon dark brown sugar 
  • Water to make paste

Coconut milk and almond Scrub

  • 1 cup of white clay
  • 2 tsp grounded almonds
  • 2 tsp grounded roses petals
  • Coconut milk to make paste

Fresh fruits scrub

  • Papaya
  • Banana
  • Orange

Combined these fresh fruits in equal proportion. Enzymes found in these fruits have skin-cleansing properties.

How to make herbal skin care face pack?

Since face pack available in the market contain a lot of chemicals so most of the skin care professional advised to avoid their regular use.

Ayurvedic herbs have numerous healthy skin related herbs mentioned above. They are rich in the several skin health promoting phytochemicals and can be used in preparation of homemade face packs.

Herbal face packs are safe and can give a smooth and glowing skin. 

Aloe vera face pack- can be made by adding rose water and lemon juice in the fresh aloe vera gel.

Tulsi and neem face pack- Beneficial in preventing acne and other skin related ailments. It can be prepared by mixing tulsi and neem leaf power with some rose water.

Turmeric face pack- can be made by adding a pinch of the turmeric and some rose water in the Besan (gram flour).
